Chicago’s Future

Since Mayor Daley’s announcement on September 7 that he won’t be running for reelection in 2011, Chicagoans have been abuzz with excitement, rumors and ideas for how to organize in this historic moment.

On the Chicago stop on Billy’s book tour last week, people from around the city came together to start brainstorming about how we make sure that the next mayor and the new Chicago city council are more transparent, more progressive and more responsive to the needs of the people.

We all agreed that there may come a point when it becomes clear which mayoral and city council candidates are most deserving of our support. But for now, regardless of who jumps in the race, we have an enormous opportunity ahead of us to get organized, get mobilized, and make sure we don’t get stuck with more corruption and self-interested governance.

If you’re in Chicago, please join us for a non-partisan meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 22 from 5:30-7:30pm at the offices of In These Times, 2040 N. Milwaukee Ave. Chicago, IL 60647.
